Alessandra Steinherr, award-winning beauty director of Glamour UK, has dedicated her career to helping women navigate the world of makeup and take beauty into their own hands. Whether through the magazine or her popular blog, through a change of moisturizer or mindset, the transformations Alessandra inspires every day are powerfully gorgeous. Here, everyone’s “personal beauty editor” ¬discusses the path to her highly covetable dream job, feeling at ease in your own skin and the universal magic of makeup.
What’s behind your passion for makeup and beauty?
Reading my grandmother’s fashion magazines growing up, I was always most inspired by faces and makeup. What I love about beauty and makeup is that I think it’s incredibly democratic and that it’s truly for everyone. This is why I personally resonate with M∙A∙C – they promote all ages, all races and all sexes. That’s at the heart of my passion for beauty. Anyone can buy a lipstick to make themselves feel better.

What’s your advice for anyone dreaming of breaking into the world of beauty editorial?
I began my career in magazines through work experience and learned on the job, since it’s not really something you can study to become a beauty editor. You need passion and curiosity, which is the main reason I have longevity in this field. I’m always curious and I always feel like I can learn. If you want to break into beauty editorial, you need a combination of curiosity and fearlessness for trying new things. Just be warned – the job isn’t just constant glamour! It’s quite a lot of work.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned at Glamour UK?
You have to learn to compromise, even if you’re creative and have a strong vision. I definitely have opinions of how I want something to read or look. So when it comes to my social channels, I do whatever I want. But for magazines, it’s about adapting your own vision to create the collective vision.
Do you have a personal beauty philosophy?
When you project comfort, you project beauty. In my opinion, you are most beautiful when you feel at ease with yourself.
How did you decide on your M·A·C Lipstick shade?
I wanted something that would be the ideal colour of lips. People always speak about the perfect nude, and my idea of that is more of a natural pink that you can put on without a mirror because it’s so close to your real lip colour.
I wanted something that was like a perfect pair of jeans, a white T-shirt, something easy and effortless. I also wanted it to be sheer. When I was in the lab, I was saying, “I want the finish to be lustre!” A lustre texture is fresh and simple, and it moisturises if I need it to.

Describe your readers and followers. Why is your Lipstick a great fit for them?
I’m so proud of my readers because there is real age diversity in their community. I don’t just want to talk to young girls or more mature girls – I think beauty is for everyone and you can discuss the same products at different ages. My followers are also very educated about beauty. I can tell because they often ask real questions that are sometimes challenging.
Overall, my followers are everyday women and girls who have busy lives and need real solutions for real life. They’re not just looking for what might just give them the best selfie. I feel grateful and empowered that they can come to me to look for answers about everyday, real life. That’s what beauty is really all about.
